Governor Cuomo Announces 10 Citizen Preparedness Trainings Across the State This Saturday [feedly]

This just popped up on the governor's site.  Seems like it may be worth attending.  Unfortunately I just found out about it and will not be able to go.

Cr0chet20: Backpacking Gear I've Changed

Here's a great video from Cr0chet20.  I would add though that the katadyn filters can fail because they are plastic.  I've seen it happen.  Always have a backup.

Swiss Family Robinson

Here's a casting call for anybody interested.  Check it out if you want.
They are looking for a family consisting of 2 parents with at least 2 sons older than 14 (just like the original show), whom really want to escape the rat race of society to live off the grid in a remote, warm location for several weeks.
Qualifications are:
-Solid people who MUST be able to handle their own in the wilderness (can hunt, camp, fish, hike, make fires, knowledge of plants, etc)
-Huge strong, personalities that will be interesting to watch (especially the dad) -People who either have been wanting to "leave it all behind," or who already are in the process
-People who can leave their houses, jobs, lives, etc this summer, 2014 (the network will work around their schedule)

What are they teaching our children?

A high school student in upstate New York was suspended for wearing an NRA T-shirt that touted the second amendment after he refused to turn it inside out or cover the words with duct tape.

If you live in this school district you should be calling and demanding a change of administration.

Reader Question

I don’t know how much of your readership lives in/around NYC but I’m looking for some suggestions for my daughter who’s moving to Manhattan in a few months.  What do folks carry for self-defense in the city…what’s legal or what do the police look the other way on.  Out here in flyover country she’d be carrying pepper spray for a few more years then I’d move her into a CCW pistol when she was old enough...but I have no idea what she can get away with in NYC.  She’s still young enough that she’s concerned with appearances so I’m looking for something that is ‘normal’ for young ladies there.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you can provide,

Andrew J. Jackson

I don't live near the city but I know the gun laws are rediculous.  I will refer you to http://ny-prepnet.blogspot.com/2013/08/guest-post-new-york-knife-law-for.html
Honestly I can't imagine why anyone would move there but I'm sure she has her reasons.  If anyone else has suggestions feel free to write them in the comments or send them to me and I will forward them to Andrew.

It's Tax Season

Just a quick tip to those of you looking to do your taxes online.
Don't click links you get in your email.
It is so common these days to get phishing scams that look like they are from the IRS or turbotax.
It is best to open your browser and go directly to the site you are looking for.
Also, before you do that make sure your antivirus and antimalware software is up to date.
It would be a shame to spend hours accidentally giving your information to an identity thief.
